Benjamin Valderrama

Short Bio

I’m a PhD student doing computational biology to better understand the microbiome-gut-brain axis. I work under the supervision of Professors John F. Cryan and Gerard Clarke at APC microbiome Ireland.

Since my first year as an undergrad I have been working in the microbiome-gut-brain axis. Although I started doing molecular work, I transitioned to fully computational 💻🧬 work some years ago.

I’ve experience working in academia, industry, in their interface, and as a consultant.

In my daily life I like reading, hiking, drinking coffee and doing 3D design and printing.

Research interests

My research focuses in three areas:

  • Microbiome modulation of the gut barrier integrity and its effects on host gut-brain health.
  • The gut microbiome of underrepresented population and its implications on brain health.
  • Probiotics and Psychobiotics development.
